My first reaction to today’s prompt is “5,000 steps? That’s it? Setting the bar kind of low, aren’t we?” And besides, what kind of prompt is this? How does posting “I did it, I did the bare minimum of a lightly active day” produce anything worth reading?
There’s a bit of truth in all that. But what’s also true is that we’re increasingly sedentary. We pour our attention all day into things that don’t matter much — the latest social media trend, the dopamine fix of the next video, how to earn more money, how to be more attractive. You know what’s actually important? Taking care of ourselves. And this prompt at least points in that direction: am I being active today? For a lot of folks, that simple push might be enough to get them out of the computer chair or off the sofa, and I can respect that.
Personally, I went for a quick bike ride around Canton this morning, first time in months. My legs feel like jelly and I’m exhausted, but I’m happy I did it — and somewhere in there I hit the 5,000 steps too.
