I’m sure this varies family by family in the United States, but we seem so isolated here. Maybe it’s because it’s such a big country and people tend to move away when they grow up, or maybe it’s our individualism and desire to break away and “be our own person” but we don’t seem to have very strong family ties here. Especially extended family – we don’t stay in contact with each other, we don’t take care of each other. In many countries, it’s by necessity that family stick together, pool their resources, share child-care duties. It could be it’s our relative wealth that drives us to not depend on one another, because we’d rather depend on our checkbooks to provide us the resources to meet the problems of life. Whatever the reason, isolation is a common problem in the US, and I view some other countries that are more focused on family with some amount of envy.
