The Plausible Deniability of the Fire Emoji

Daily writing prompt
What are your favorite emojis?

I’m almost 40, which means I’ve crossed the invisible line where certain slang is no longer mine to use out loud.

“That’s fire!” — I know what it means. I feel what it means. But the moment those words leave my mouth, something shifts in the room. Eyes glance sideways. There’s a half-second pause. I’ve tried too hard, and everyone can tell.

And yet. Drop a 🔥 in a text message, and somehow it lands perfectly. Nobody winces. Nobody questions it. The compliment gets across clean.

I’ve been thinking about why that is, and I think it comes down to plausible deniability. When I say “that’s fire,” I’m claiming the slang. I’m planting a flag and declaring myself fluent in a language that, let’s be honest, I learned secondhand. It’s a performance — and a transparent one.

But the emoji? The emoji is a wink. It’s me pointing at the thing rather than trying to be the thing. There’s a layer of self-awareness baked in, a little humor that says I know exactly what I’m doing here. And that makes all the difference. The cringe lives in the sincerity of the attempt. The emoji sidesteps sincerity entirely.

Maybe that’s what emojis are really for — not replacing words, but giving us just enough distance from them to use the ones we shouldn’t technically have access to anymore.

That’s the trick. I’m not saying it’s fire.

I’m just saying “it’s🔥”.
